HubSpot’s CTA (call-to-action) tool lets you create trackable buttons and banners that live on your website, in emails, or embedded in blog posts. When set up correctly, CTAs connect clicks directly to contacts in your CRM — so you can see which offers actually drive conversions, not just clicks.
This guide walks through how to create CTAs in HubSpot, where to use them, and how to test and improve them over time.
The CTA tool lives under the Lead Capture section in the Marketing menu. Click “Create CTA” to start.
HubSpot supports button CTAs (the most common), image CTAs, and custom HTML CTAs. For most use cases, a button CTA is the right starting point.
Keep button text to 2-5 words and action-focused: “Get a quote”, “Download the guide”, “Book a demo”. Set the destination URL — this can be a landing page, external URL, or a HubSpot form page.
Match the button colour to your brand. HubSpot lets you set text colour, background colour, and border radius. Keep contrast high for accessibility.
Copy the embed code and paste it into your HubSpot page, blog post, or email. On HubSpot pages, you can also drag the CTA module directly into the editor.
Where do CTAs work best in HubSpot?
CTAs perform differently depending on where they appear. In blog posts, a CTA placed after the second or third section typically gets more engagement than one at the very end — readers who reach the bottom may already have decided to leave. In emails, a single prominent CTA tends to outperform multiple competing buttons.
On landing pages and product pages, the CTA should match the intent of the page. A page explaining a product should have a “Get started” or “Book a demo” CTA, not a newsletter signup. Mismatched CTAs are one of the more common reasons conversion rates stay low.
HubSpot also supports placing CTAs inside email campaigns directly from the email editor. When a contact clicks a tracked CTA in a HubSpot email, that click is logged to their contact record, which you can use to trigger workflows or score leads.
How do smart CTAs work?
Smart CTAs show different versions to different visitors based on rules you define. For example, you can show a “Request a demo” button to visitors who are already known contacts, and a “Download our free guide” button to anonymous visitors.
Rules can be based on list membership, lifecycle stage, device type, location, or referral source. To use smart CTAs, create a standard CTA first, then click “Make smart” and define the conditions for each variant.
Smart CTAs are available on Marketing Hub Professional and above. If you are on Starter, your CTAs will show the same version to all visitors.
How do you track CTA performance?
HubSpot tracks two main metrics for each CTA: views (how many times the CTA was displayed) and clicks (how many times it was clicked). The click rate is the ratio of clicks to views.
To review performance, go to Marketing > Lead Capture > CTAs and sort by click rate or total clicks. You can also filter by date range to compare performance across campaigns.
For deeper analysis, use the HubSpot reporting dashboard to build a custom report that maps CTA clicks to contact creation or deal progression. This lets you see which CTAs are generating pipeline, not just traffic.
Can you A/B test CTAs in HubSpot?
Yes. HubSpot supports A/B testing for CTAs on Marketing Hub Professional plans and above. To run a test, open a CTA, click “Run a test”, and create a variant with a different button text, colour, or destination URL.
HubSpot will split traffic evenly between the original and the variant and report which version gets a higher click rate. The test does not automatically declare a winner — you review the data and manually switch to the better performer when you have enough data.
For most CTAs, running a test for at least two weeks and gathering a few hundred impressions per variant will give you a reliable read. Shorter tests with low traffic tend to produce misleading results.
What are the most common CTA mistakes?
The most common issue is vague button text. “Click here” and “Learn more” give visitors no reason to act. Specific, outcome-focused text consistently performs better than generic labels.
Another common issue is sending CTA clicks to the homepage or a general service page instead of a dedicated landing page. A visitor who clicks “Get a quote” expects to see a quote form, not a full website to navigate. Every CTA should link to a page that completes the action the button promised.
Finally, many teams skip the tracking step entirely. HubSpot CTAs are tracked by default when embedded via the native module, but if you paste a raw link with no tracking parameters, HubSpot will not attribute the conversion to the correct source. Use the embed code, not the raw URL.
Frequently asked questions
Do HubSpot CTAs work outside of HubSpot pages?
Yes. The embed code can be placed on any webpage, not just HubSpot-hosted pages. However, tracking works best when the HubSpot tracking code is also installed on the page.
Can I use CTAs in HubSpot emails?
Yes. You can insert a tracked CTA into any HubSpot marketing email from the email editor. Clicks are logged to the contact’s activity timeline.
What is the difference between a CTA and a form?
A CTA is a button or image that directs a visitor to take an action, typically clicking through to a landing page or a form. A form captures contact details directly. Most conversion paths use both: a CTA drives traffic to a page that contains a form.
Are CTAs available on the free HubSpot plan?
Basic CTAs are available on the free plan. Smart CTAs and A/B testing require a paid Marketing Hub plan.
