HubSpot Original Source: How to Track Where Your Contacts Come From

October 4, 2026 · 6 min read

HubSpot’s Original Source property records the first channel that brought a contact to your website. It is set automatically when a contact is created and does not change after that, giving you a permanent record of each person’s acquisition channel.

This makes it one of the most reliable fields in your CRM for understanding which channels drive net-new contacts over time, without relying on ad-platform attribution alone.

HubSpot Original Source values: what each one means

  • Organic Search: contact arrived from a non-paid search result (Google, Bing, etc.)
  • Paid Search: contact arrived from a paid search ad (Google Ads, Microsoft Ads)
  • Social Media: contact arrived from an organic social post or profile link
  • Paid Social: contact arrived from a paid social ad (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
  • Email Marketing: contact arrived via a tracked email campaign link
  • Referrals: contact arrived from a link on another website
  • Direct Traffic: contact arrived by typing your URL directly, or from an untracked link
  • Offline Sources: contact was imported or created manually inside HubSpot
  • Other Campaigns: contact arrived via a tracked URL with a UTM medium HubSpot does not recognise automatically

How does HubSpot set Original Source automatically?

HubSpot reads the HTTP referrer and any UTM parameters present when a contact first converts: for example, submitting a form or clicking a tracked email link. A chatflow trigger also captures source at that moment. The source is determined from that session and then locked.

When UTM parameters are present, HubSpot uses them to categorise the source. A contact arriving from a URL tagged with utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc is recorded as Paid Search. Without UTM tags, HubSpot relies on the HTTP referrer sent by the browser.

For Southeast Asian teams running LINE OA campaigns or WhatsApp broadcasts, this creates a practical problem. The same applies to any link distributed via QR code or other offline formats. Unless you add UTM parameters to those links, every contact that comes through will be recorded as Direct Traffic. A contact clicking a LINE message without UTM tags looks identical to someone who typed your URL directly.

The fix is straightforward: tag every link you distribute outside your website. HubSpot’s tracking URL builder (under Reports in the main navigation) generates properly formatted links. Using utm_source=line&utm_medium=messaging on your LINE OA links keeps that channel visible in source reports.

What is the difference between Original Source and Latest Source?

HubSpot stores two related source fields for each contact:

  • Original Source (with Original Source Drill-Down 1 and 2): set once when the contact is first created. This is the acquisition record.
  • Latest Source: updates with each new tracked session. This reflects the most recent channel a contact came through.

For acquisition reporting, Original Source is what you want. It tells you which channel generated the contact in the first place. For re-engagement analysis, Latest Source tells you what brought a dormant contact back.

Many teams review both together: if a contact originally came through Organic Search but their Latest Source is Email Marketing, that tells you organic content is filling the top of funnel while email is driving re-engagement at a later stage.

What do the Drill-Down fields add?

HubSpot provides two additional original source fields that carry more specific detail:

Original Source Drill-Down 1 typically holds the UTM medium or the referral domain. For an organic Google visit, this would be google. For a referral, it would be the referring website.

Original Source Drill-Down 2 typically holds the UTM campaign name or a specific ad identifier if present in the URL.

Including all three fields in your HubSpot reports lets you see which specific campaigns are generating contacts, not just which broad channel category. Without the drill-downs, you can see that Paid Search is working but not which campaign is responsible.

Can you change or override Original Source after the fact?

The field is read-only inside the standard contact record interface. HubSpot does not allow workflows to update it by design: changing it after creation would undermine its purpose as a stable acquisition record.

If you need to correct source data for contacts imported without proper attribution, you can update the field during a bulk import using the property internal name hs_analytics_source. This is useful when migrating contacts from another CRM where source data was tracked separately.

For contacts created going forward, the most effective way to control source accuracy is to tag every inbound link before you distribute it. The HubSpot custom properties guide covers how to build supplementary tracking fields if you need to capture attribution details beyond what the standard fields hold.

How do you use Original Source in reports and workflows?

The most common report is a contacts-by-source breakdown: group contacts by Original Source and filter by Create Date for your period of interest. The result is a channel-by-channel view of acquisition over time.

To go deeper, build a conversion funnel report that cross-references source with lifecycle stage (for example, showing which sources produce the highest rate of contacts who become Marketing Qualified Leads). This tells you about channel quality rather than just volume.

Original Source also works as a workflow enrollment criterion. You can enrol organic contacts into a different nurture sequence than paid contacts, or assign paid social leads to a specific sales owner automatically. The HubSpot contacts guide covers how contact properties map to workflow logic.

What causes incorrect source data?

A few patterns are worth knowing about:

  • HubSpot tracking code missing from certain pages. If a contact converts on a page without the script, HubSpot cannot read the referrer and the source defaults to Direct.
  • Untagged campaign links. LINE and WhatsApp traffic appear as Direct unless UTM parameters are added before distributing. The same applies to any link sent via QR code.
  • Bulk imports without source population. Contacts imported from spreadsheets are assigned Offline Sources unless you include the source field in the import file.
  • Browser privacy settings or ad blockers stripping referrer headers. This inflates Direct Traffic for privacy-conscious audiences.

Running a periodic audit of Direct Traffic volume is a practical way to spot gaps. If Direct is unusually high during a period when you know the source, the likely cause is missing UTM tags.

Frequently asked questions

Does HubSpot track visits or contact records for Original Source?
It tracks the session that resulted in a contact being created. Later visits by the same contact do not update it.

Does HubSpot automatically track LINE OA traffic?
Not by default. LINE traffic appears as Direct Traffic unless you add UTM parameters to your LINE links before sending.

Is Original Source available on all HubSpot plans?
Yes, it is a standard property on every plan including Free. Revenue attribution reports that tie source to closed deals require Sales Hub Professional or above.

Can I use Original Source to trigger a workflow?
Yes. You can use it as an enrollment criterion to route contacts differently by acquisition channel: assigning paid leads to a specific owner, or fast-tracking organic contacts that match a high-intent profile.

What does “Other Campaigns” mean in source reports?
This appears when a contact arrived via a link with UTM parameters, but the utm_medium value is not one HubSpot maps to a standard source category. Using conventional medium values keeps Other Campaigns small and your source breakdown clean.
