Talk to groups, not the whole list
Not every customer wants the same thing at the same time. Segmentation sorts your contacts into meaningful buckets so each one hears a message that fits where they are. A hotel group in Bangkok might split guests into corporate bookers, leisure travellers, and returning members, then send each group a different rate, language, or seasonal offer instead of one generic blast.
What defines a segment
Demographic and firmographic
Age, role, company size, industry, or region.
Behavioural
Pages viewed, emails opened, purchases, or product usage.
Lifecycle stage
Lead, marketing qualified, sales qualified, or existing customer.
Value or intent
Deal size, engagement score, or readiness to buy.
Properties define it, lists do the grouping
In HubSpot, every contact carries properties such as lifecycle stage, country, or last activity date. Active lists turn those properties into living segments that update on their own as contacts change, while static lists capture a fixed group at a point in time. From there you can route, nurture, or score each segment differently. Lead scoring sharpens value-based segments, and marketing automation sends the right message to each list.
