HubSpot Properties

The fields that store your CRM data: property types, groups, calculated properties, and why a tidy setup keeps reporting and automation reliable.

HubSpot properties are the individual fields that store data on your CRM records. Every contact, company, deal, ticket, and custom object holds values in properties, from a contact’s email and lifecycle stage to a deal’s amount and close date. Tidy, well-named properties keep reporting accurate and automations reliable.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between a default and a custom property?
Default properties ship with HubSpot for common data like email, lifecycle stage, and deal amount. Custom properties are ones you create to capture information specific to your business, such as a hotel’s room count or a preferred contact channel like LINE.
What are calculated properties?
Calculated properties derive their value from other properties instead of manual entry. You can build them with equations, pull a minimum or maximum across fields, or roll up values from associated records. They update automatically when the source fields change.
Why do property groups matter?
Property groups organise related fields under a named heading on the record sidebar. Without them, dozens of properties become hard to scan. Grouping keeps records readable for your sales and service teams and makes the right fields easy to find.
Can I change a property type after creating it?
Some field type changes are allowed and some are restricted, depending on the existing data and how the property is used in workflows, lists, and reports. It is worth planning the type up front, since changing a heavily used property later can affect downstream automations.
How do messy properties affect reporting?
Duplicate fields, free-text where a dropdown belongs, and inconsistent naming tend to fragment your data, which makes lists and reports less accurate. A tidy property setup with clear groups and standardised options keeps segmentation and reporting dependable.
